Edo State on Brink of Chaos as Governor Obaseki’s “Do or Die” Election Threat Sparks Outrage
The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has written an open letter to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, urging him to relocate to Edo State to prevent looming violence and chaos ahead of the gubernatorial election.
Governor Godwin Obaseki’s recent declaration at a PDP mega rally that the election is a “do or die” affair has sparked widespread condemnation. The APC described the statement as “inflammatory language” that “sends dangerous signals to the people of Edo, stoking fears of violence and intimidation.”
The letter, signed by Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah, Director of the APC New Media Directorate, noted that Obaseki’s remarks are not an isolated incident, recalling his previous threat that “Nigeria would burn.” The APC warned that the governor’s actions, including his withdrawal from the peace accord signed in Benin City, signal his intention to disregard the democratic process entirely.
The APC appealed to the IGP to deploy additional security personnel to the state and to personally relocate to Edo to oversee security arrangements. The letter stated, “Your presence, Inspector General, would not only provide the necessary reassurance to the citizens but would also send a powerful message that no individual, no matter their position, is above the law.”
The APC expressed faith in the IGP’s ability to ensure the safety and security of the people, saying, “You, Sir, represent their final hope.” The letter concluded, “Your intervention at this time will undoubtedly calm nerves and restore confidence in the electoral process.”
