Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced his withdrawal of support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara due to allegations of dishonesty. In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Wike expressed disappointment with Fubara’s leadership and accused him of spreading falsehoods. Although he didn’t provide specific details, Wike stated that his support for Fubara’s political career has ended.
This sudden distancing is significant, given Wike’s instrumental role in Fubara’s rise to governorship. The fallout has stunned many within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and marks a notable development in Rivers State politics.
During the same interview, Wike also addressed the upcoming Edo State governorship election, scheduled for September 21, 2024. He declared his refusal to support incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki or the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who is backed by Obaseki. Wike criticized Obaseki, calling him “an ingrate,” highlighting tensions between the two politicians.
Wike’s refusal to back Ighodalo points to growing divisions within the PDP as the election approaches. His withdrawal of support for Fubara and Obaseki signals a significant shift in political alliances, with potential implications for the party’s unity and prospects in upcoming elections.
The Edo APC Candidate support base has in the last few days grown, with some Edolites seeing him as a better option.
