Peter Obi: “I Never Said I’d Be Vice President to Anyone,” Clarifies Previous Statement

Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, Clarifies Position on 2027 Elections and Collaboration

In a statement released today, Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, addressed the controversy surrounding his recent interview with News Central TV. Obi expressed surprise at the misrepresentation of his words, stating, “My statement was unequivocal, and I am genuinely surprised by the misrepresentation of my words.”

Regarding his position on the 2027 elections, Obi reiterated, “I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges.” He emphasized his commitment to addressing the country’s pressing issues, saying, “I want them to explain how we will ensure that no child is left behind and how we will bring millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms, ensure healthy living, and pull people out of poverty.”

On the issue of collaboration, Obi clarified, “When I was asked about collaboration, I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centered on state capture.” He stressed his willingness to partner with those who share his vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress, adding, “I remain committed to the Labour Party, and if anyone wishes to negotiate or join forces, they must disclose their true intentions.”

Obi also addressed speculation about his potential candidacy in 2027, stating, “I am not desperate to become president, but I am determined to see Nigeria work.” He further emphasized, “I am not desperate for any position at all, as I believe I can make contributions as I am already doing without occupying any office.”

Most importantly, Obi put to rest rumors about his potential vice presidential candidacy, stating unequivocally, “For the avoidance of doubts, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone, and it’s unequivocal.”

In conclusion, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria, saying, “My commitment to Nigeria remains steadfast, and I even believe it is possible to contribute to its progress without occupying any office as I am already doing.”
