The Presidency has drawn a parallel between Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former US President Donald Trump, citing their similar approaches to politics. Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, made the comparison on (link unavailable), stating that both Obi and Trump use negative rhetoric to rile up their base.
Ajayi’s comments came after the US presidential debate between Trump and Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, where Harris was deemed to have convincingly won. Ajayi noted that Harris effectively exploited Trump’s weaknesses, while Trump made 33 false claims during the debate, compared to Harris’s one incorrect claim.
The comparison highlights concerns about the spread of misinformation and the use of divisive rhetoric in political campaigns, both in Nigeria and the US. The 2024 US elections are scheduled for November 5, 2024.
