A lawyer, Sunday Ununu, has been accused of killing an orphan, Nnamdi Nwite Ugo, during a celebration in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The incident reportedly occurred while Ununu was celebrating the election of a loyalist as leader of the Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney group, which manages land dealings in the area. Ununu fired shots into the air, and a stray bullet hit Ugo in the nose, piercing through his mouth and causing his death.
Ugo, an orphan with no close relatives, was a distant relation to some members of the community. The family of the lawyer and Ugo’s distant relatives are reportedly negotiating to cover up the incident, with a promise of a specific amount for Ugo’s burial and to silence the matter.
A resident of the area, who wished to remain anonymous, told Daily Sun, “Unfortunately, a bullet hit Ugo on the nose and it pierced through his mouth and he died… Nobody is talking about the matter but the family of the lawyer and the deceased’s distant relatives are negotiating with a view to cover the incident.”
A video of the celebration and shooting has been circulating on social media, showing Ununu wearing a yellow T-shirt and firing into the air. DSP Joshua Ukandu, Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Police Command, confirmed Ununu’s arrest, saying, “I don’t know the details of that matter but I am aware of what you are saying. He is even in our custody. It’s just that the circumstance is what I don’t know.”
