The Nigerian football community is in shock and mourning following the tragic death of former international goalkeeper Christian Obi. Obi’s passing was met with an outpouring of condolences from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), who described the news as “shocking and very sad”.
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau expressed his heartfelt sympathies to Obi’s family, friends, and the Imo government, owners of Heartland Football Club, where Obi was a coach. Gusau also wished speedy recovery to those injured in the accident.
Obi’s football legacy includes being a member of the Nigerian U20 team that won bronze at the 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship. He played a crucial role in the team’s third-place victory, saving three penalty kicks in a shootout against the Soviet Union.
