AYATI ATTACK: DEATH TOLL REACHES 74

The death toll from the August 8 attack on Ayati Community in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State has risen to 74. The community had initially reported 30 deaths, but search parties discovered more bodies, bringing the total to 59. Fifteen others died in the hospital between August 8 and 12, further increasing the casualty count.

A list compiled by the community, obtained by our correspondent, reveals that 59 bodies were recovered shortly after the attack, while the remaining 15 were found later and taken to the hospital. The list also shows that 40 people were killed between July 18, 2023, and July 2024.

Residents report that the attack was carried out by a large number of bandits who launched a surprise assault on Ayati, the headquarters of Borikyo ward. A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that over 50 people were killed in the initial attack, with efforts ongoing to recover more bodies.

Chief Ayati Shima, a prominent politician from the community, condemned the incident and decried the government’s inability to curb insecurity in the area. He noted that the list of victims compiled by the community was only a tip of the iceberg, as many security challenges faced by the area went unreported.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Benue Command, SP Catherine Anene, had earlier confirmed the incident, stating that two policemen and 15 villagers were killed. However, she did not respond to calls or messages seeking an update on the death toll.

The Ukum area, along with Logo and Kastina-Ala LGAs, has been plagued by armed outlaws for years, despite joint security operations aimed at eradicating gangsterism in the region. The attack has left the community deserted, affecting the local economy and making it difficult for farmers to access their farms.
