Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in Anambra, Nigeria, killing a police officer. The incident occurred on Friday at a checkpoint beside the Nnobi Police Station, on Nnobi/Nkpor Road in Idemili South Local Government Area. The slain officer was the driver of one of the police vehicles.
According to a source, “The hoodlums entered the community on Friday and lodged in a house close to the checkpoint. They broke a wall to enter the compound, forced residents to open the gate, and drove in their cars.” The attackers also collected residents’ phones and warned them not to raise the alarm, saying they would be shot if they did.
This attack comes less than three weeks after a similar incident on Omata-Nnobi Road in Nnewi, where gunmen killed a police officer and used an explosive device.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the attack. He said, “It is true. One policeman was killed, and there is an operation going on in that area now, which the Commissioner of Police has ordered.” Ikenga described the incident as “a pure example of the highest price a security officer pays in discharging their duty.”
The police are currently conducting an operation in the area, as directed by the state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam. Ikenga added, “Meanwhile, there is an ongoing operation in the area on the order of the Commissioner of Police. Further details shall be communicated.”
