The Enugu State Government has taken a bold step to address the growing concern of noise pollution in the state by directing all churches and mosques to remove outdoor loudspeakers and install soundproofing measures in their worship centers. This directive, issued after a stakeholders’ meeting, aims to enforce the Enugu State Anti-Noise Pollution Policy and create a peaceful environment for residents.
The Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) convened the meeting, which included Christian and Muslim leaders, government officials, and media practitioners, to address the escalating noise pollution concerns. Chairman Uche Anya announced a 90-day deadline for compliance, emphasizing the severity of the issue, with over 1,000 complaints received in the past year.
The directive targets areas with high noise pollution, such as Independence Layout, GRA, Trans-Ekulu, and Abakpa Nike. This move follows a similar order issued in 2023, targeting nightclubs, beer parlors, and other entertainment venues in residential areas. The government stresses the importance of religious leaders’ cooperation in implementing this policy and creating a noise-free environment for all residents.
