*Abuja Court Sentences Five Individuals for Internet Fraud*

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured the conviction of five individuals for internet fraud on August 12, 2024. Justice C.O. Agashieze of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sentenced the defendants, who pleaded guilty to charges of obtaining by false pretense and personation.

The defendants, Desmond Ikpefua, Oyeniji Efosa Temitope, Exiobor Raphael, Emmanuel Gabriel, and Samuel Owoicho, were arrested by EFCC operatives for internet fraud and subsequently charged to court.

The court sentenced Ikpefua to six months’ imprisonment and Temitope to four months’ imprisonment, both without the option of a fine. Raphael received a non-custodial sentence, including community service and a fine of N50,000. Gabriel and Owoicho were each fined N50,000, with Owoicho also required to perform community service.

The court ordered the forfeiture of all instruments used to perpetrate the crimes to the Federal Government.
