The Catholic Bishops of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province have issued a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that its policies have failed to bring the promised reforms and hope to Nigerians.
In a communiqué released after a two-day meeting, the bishops expressed deep concerns about the country’s deteriorating economic conditions, skyrocketing inflation, and growing hunger and anger among the populace.
The bishops acknowledged the legitimacy of the nationwide hunger protest by youths but warned of the possibility of the demonstration being hijacked by miscreants, leading to violence and further destabilization.
They called for collective introspection, strengthening of political institutions, improved transparency, and accountability in public administration, emphasizing that both leadership and followership must work together to address the nation’s challenges.
The bishops also urged state governments to organize free and fair local government elections, stressing the need for citizens to reject corrupt practices and embrace their civic responsibilities.
In a message of hope, the bishops encouraged the people of the South-East to draw inspiration from their resilience after the Nigeria-Biafra War and work collectively to rebuild society.
