A 41-year-old man, Nwalobi Fredrick, has been arrested for allegedly impregnating his 16-year-old sister-in-law in Ekwulobia, Anambra State. The suspect, an artisan from Ebonyi State, was taken into custody by security operatives after the girl’s family reported the incident to the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare.
According to Chidinmma Ikeanyionwu, media aide to the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, the suspect blamed the devil for his actions. During interrogation, the 16-year-old girl revealed that the incident started in late January when she was brought to live with her in-law to continue her education after her mother’s death.
The girl stated, “It was just a day after settling in his house that Mr. Nwalobi first had carnal knowledge of me, and ever since, he has been having his way with my body.” She further revealed that she was already four months pregnant and her in-law had refused to take responsibility for the pregnancy.
The suspect claimed he couldn’t take care of the girl due to financial constraints, saying, “I don’t have money to take care of her since I now have my own family.” Despite his pleas, Obinabo handed him over to the Divisional Police in Ekwulobia for further investigation, vowing to get to the root of the matter to ensure justice for the victim and serve as a deterrent to others.
Obinabo is determined to address the issue, stating that the suyspect’s actions will not go unpunished. The case is currently under investigation, and the suspect will face charges for his alleged crimes. The incident highlights the need for increased awareness and protection for vulnerable individuals, particularly children, from sexual abuse and exploitation.
