The National Rescue Movement (NRM) gubernatorial candidate in Edo State, Dr. Dennis Aikoriogie has expressed optimism about his chances of winning despite internal party issues and strong competition from other political parties.
In an exclusive interview with African Independent Television (AIT) ahead of the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, Dr. Aikoriogie stated that he won’t be stepping now for anyone for now.
When asked about the internal leadership issues within his party, and how it affected his candidacy, Dr. Aikoriogie stated,
“No, it will not hinder INEC from going ahead because the issues within the party are internal differences and as far as the Party can come into a compromise, a settlement , they have the powers to present the candidates of their choice and INEC is duty bound to uphold the candidate the party has so presented. So that is where I come in as the consensus candidate of the party.”
He reaffirmed his candidacy, saying, “Exactly, I am the candidate of NRM.”
Regarding the election, Dr. Aikoriogie acknowledged the strength of opposing parties, including the APC, PDP, and Labour Party, but confirmed that he would continue with his campaigns.
“We are battle ready to go into the field and to commence the electioneering process.”
He expressed confidence in his ability to win, citing the legal battles and controversies surrounding other parties.
“There are issues within other political parties, these are issues round involving forgery and falsification of documents, it’s being in the media space. I believe also people are looking out based on those evidences, people are looking out for candidates who does not have legal battles of such to rally round. So that is where my candidacy is going to throw more speed and people will come to rally round me to support my candidacy, to ensure that I become the next governor of Edo State”, he said.
Dr. Aikoriogie emphasized his commitment to bringing change to Edo State, which he believes has been plagued by backwardness under the governance of PDP and APC in the last 16 years.
He positioned himself as the alternative candidate, saying, “My message to the people of Edo State is that I have come as the person to rescue Edo State… preaching a change, changing the narrative and the course of direction within the Edo politics.”
He urged the people of Edo State to rally behind his candidacy, noting, “People now are looking for alternatives where they could rally their hopes on and see how someone who means well for the people is elected governor of Edo State come September 21, 2024.”
