The Edo State Government has alleged that reinstated Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu orchestrated the violent attacks in Benin, resulting in the death of Inspector Onuh Akoh. Commissioner for Communication and Orientation Chris Nehikhare made the accusation in a statement on Friday.
Despite the court’s reinstatement, the government claims Shaibu remains impeached, as they have filed a notice of appeal and stay of execution. The appeal has been communicated to the relevant authorities, including the police.
Nehikhare emphasized that the filing of a stay of execution maintains the status quo, meaning Shaibu’s impeachment stands until the Appeal Court rules otherwise. He condemned Shaibu’s actions, stating that he mobilized armed thugs to cause chaos in Benin, defying the law and the stay of execution.
The government’s accusations and legal moves set the stage for a prolonged political battle in Edo State.
