The Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, has revealed that students from the Southern part of the country have been hesitant to apply for the recently established loan fund, citing skepticism and doubts about its authenticity. In contrast, tertiary institutions in the North have been proactive in helping their students access the loan, providing necessary data and support.
Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Sawyerr noted that university students are leading in loan applications, followed by polytechnic and college of education students. He acknowledged growing awareness and interest in the South but emphasized the need to address skepticism and doubts.
The flagging off of the loan disbursement by President Tinubu marked a significant milestone in the program’s implementation. Sawyerr reassured that NELFUND is committed to supporting Nigerian students in public institutions to complete their education programs.
