Tragedy struck in Benue State on Sunday as gunmen suspected to be armed herders launched separate attacks on communities, leaving 13 people dead. According to locals, 12 people were killed in Egwuma, Agatu Local Government Area, while a displaced person returning from a farm in Gwer West LGA was also slain.
The attacks have left several others injured and missing, with locals reporting that one displaced person was injured and five others are still unaccounted for. The community of Egwumoa in Agatu LGA was particularly affected, with suspected armed herders going on a killing spree.
A lawmaker representing Agatu state constituency at the House of Assembly, Godwin Edoh, confirmed the report, stating that 12 people were killed in the attack. He expressed frustration over the frequent killings in the area, saying, “We are tired of this daily killing at Ogbumogbo, Ejima, and all those areas down to Ikpele. Those villages have been deserted for close to one year. So, those places are like the Fulani colony.” The attacks have left the communities in a state of fear and displacement.
