The Benue State Government has announced plans to close down unapproved and sub-standard schools operating in the state. Dr. Terna Francis, Director General of the Benue State Bureau for Education Quality Assurance (BEQA), revealed that over 6,000 private schools operate in the state, but only 539 have been duly registered and certified.
BEQA has given unregistered schools until July 26, 2024, to regularize their status or face closure. The agency seeks to enforce standards and ensure tax compliance. The Benue State Board of Internal Revenue Services (BIRS) has pledged its support for the enforcement exercise, recognizing the benefits of capturing more schools in the tax net.
The move aims to improve the educational sector and ensure a better future for Benue State children. The government’s efforts have received commendations from stakeholders, urging the BEQA to persist in its endeavors. The crackdown on sub-standard schools is set to begin in August 2024.
