The Supreme Court on Monday made a landmark ruling, granting former presidents sweeping immunity from prosecution.
This decision prolongs the delay in the criminal case against Donald Trump, who faces charges for allegedly attempting to overturn his 2020 election loss.
The 6-3 ruling, backed by the court’s conservative majority, including Trump’s appointees, narrows the case and returns it to the trial court.
This decision, combined with the court’s rejection of efforts to bar Trump from the ballot, highlights the justices’ significant influence on the November election.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, “A former president has absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within their constitutional authority.”
However, Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented, stating, “The President is now a king above the law in every use of official power.”
