Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday struck down a lawsuit filed by Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), against the Federal Government.
Kanu had sought N1 billion in damages from the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Department of State Service (DSS) for alleged human rights violations.
Kanu specifically claimed that the DSS and its Director General had infringed on his right to a fair trial by restricting his lawyers’ access to him while he was in custody preparing for his criminal trial.
However, Justice Omotosho found that Kanu’s allegations lacked concrete evidence, stating that he failed to provide credible proof that his interactions with his lawyers were interfered with, that he was denied unrestricted access to his legal counsel, or that DSS officials secretly monitored his conversations with his lawyers.
As a result, the court dismissed Kanu’s suit, finding no merit in his claims of human rights violations.
