The Deputy Minority Senate Leader, Olalere Oyewumi has in a shocking move admitted to buying votes during the 2023 General Election in a viral video.
The Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District said despite his efforts, he was rejected by strong supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Onilu House polling unit.
“I tried all the tricks I knew to win but these people didn’t allow me”, he stated.
He also revealed that he gave his personal money to his aide, Ten-Ten, to buy votes, but it was rejected.
Reacting, Osun APC chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, said:
“Senator Oyewumi’s confession confirms that the Osun election was not free and fair. He is a desperate politician who engaged in vote-buying, and should be investigated by law enforcement agencies. He has no reason to remain in the Senate.”
Oyewumi’s admission has sparked outrage, with many calling for his resignation and investigation. The EFCC had deployed officials to polling units during the election to combat vote-buying, which was a major challenge for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
