The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission has announced a shift in the date of the state’s local government election from July 6 to November 16, 2024. The Chairman of the commission, John Chen, revealed this information during a press briefing in Makurdi on Friday.
The decision to postpone the election was made due to logistical constraints faced by the commission. Chen explained that more time was needed to prepare and procure election materials, which had not yet been secured.
“We have begun the process of rescheduling by developing a revised timetable that will allow for all critical activities and adequate preparation time,” Chen stated. “Today marks the issuance of the election notice, as required by the relevant statutes and guidelines will be released soon in accordance with the law.”
Chen urged political parties, candidates, and other key stakeholders to cooperate with the commission to ensure a smooth and transparent election process. Additional details regarding the rescheduled election will be shared in the coming weeks.
