The Federal Government has announced plans to establish an electricity offences tribunal to tackle electricity theft in the country.
The Managing Director of Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), Aliyu Tahir, made the announcement at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday. The tribunal, which will have an in-built appeal system, aims to expedite the prosecution of electricity-related offences and empower NEMSA’s in-house counsel to prosecute offenders.
Tahir explained that the initiative will effectively check electricity theft once implemented and that the National Assembly has been informed. The establishment of the tribunal seeks to enhance NEMSA’s enforcement powers and streamline the sanctioning process for violators, currently deemed too lengthy.
