The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed seven key factors contributing to data depletion for mobile subscribers in Nigeria, amidst growing complaints about rapid data exhaustion.
Contrary to popular belief, the Commission’s findings suggest that mobile network operators – MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile – are not solely responsible for the issue.
According to the NCC, the following factors are culprits in data depletion:
1. Background apps consuming data even when not in use
2. Automatic updates for apps, operating systems, and software
3. Location services like GPS and navigation apps
4. Data-consuming advertisements in apps
5. Data roaming charges when using phones abroad
6. Malware and viruses secretly consuming data
7. Unoptimized device settings
The Commission advises subscribers to be aware of these factors and take steps to manage their data usage effectively.
