Super Eagles Snub New National Anthem, Recite Old One Before Benin Clash

In a surprising move, the Super Eagles of Nigeria recited the old national anthem, “Arise O Compatriot”, before their 2026 World Cup Qualifier match against Benin Republic on Monday. This development comes despite the recent introduction of a new national anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee”.

The players and coaches were seen singing the familiar words of the old anthem with passion and gusto, seemingly unaware or unwilling to adopt the new anthem. This incident has sparked questions about the adoption and implementation of the new national anthem.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to issue an official statement on the matter. However, sources close to the team suggest that the players and staff may not have been adequately informed or prepared for the change. The Super Eagles went on to win the match 2-1 against Benin Republic.
