The tribunal had earlier issued an order, following a complaint by the Consumer Protection Council (CPC), restraining Multichoice Nigeria from increasing its subscription fees. However, the company went ahead to implement the price hike, leading to the fine of N150 million being imposed on them.
In addition to the fine, Multichoice Nigeria has also been directed to revert to the old subscription prices and make necessary adjustments to affected customers’ accounts within 14 days.
The tribunal also warned the pay-TV company to comply with its orders in the future, stating that any further violation would attract stiffer penalties.
Reacting to the ruling, a representative of Multichoice Nigeria expressed disappointment with the decision, stating that they would review the judgment and consider their legal options.
This development is a victory for consumers in Nigeria, as it sends a strong message to service providers that they must adhere to regulations and protect the rights of their customers.
