Aggrieved Enigies Seek Peace with Oba of Benin

The aggrieved Enigies (Dukes) of Benin Kingdom, who took the Oba Ewuare II of Benin Kingdom to court, have expressed their willingness to resolve the crisis peacefully. However, they emphasized that any resolution must be based on justice, which is why they sought legal action in the first place.

The Enigies, led by Professor Gregory Akenzua, the Oba’s uncle, are challenging their suspension as Enigie in the Benin kingdom. They claim that only the state government has the authority to suspend them, not the Oba.

Governor Godwin Obaseki has initiated a peace-building process to resolve the issue, meeting with the aggrieved Enigies to understand their concerns and broker a peaceful resolution. The Enigies have welcomed this initiative, stating that they stand for peace founded on decorum, integrity, and justice.

The crisis has prompted the Edo State Government to intervene, urging caution and warning desperate politicians not to frustrate the peace talks. The government aims to facilitate the withdrawal of the court case and promote peace in Edo South.

The Enigies have assured the governor of their commitment to peace and their acknowledgment of the Oba of Benin as their royal father. However, they also emphasized that their concerns must be addressed for a resolution to be reached.
