Controversy Over New National Anthem – Aisha Yesufu

Aisha Yesufu actions has sparked a heated debate on social media after she refused to stand during the recitation of the new national anthem at a recent event. A video circulating online showed Aisha Yesufu, widely recognised for her leading role in the 2023 Peter Obi campaign, sitting confidently while other dignitaries stood to recite the new national anthem.

According to Hobnob News reports, the incident has generated a buzz on social media, with some hailing Yesufu’s bold stance as an activist while others condemned her actions as disrespectful to the Nigerian constitution. This happened just 72 hours after President Tinubu signed a bill reinstating the old national anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee,” replacing “Arise O Compatriots.”

Apparently, approval of the new national anthem has sparked controversy, with many criticizing the move as a misplaced priority amidst economic instability. Yesufu’s actions have added fuel to the fire, with some praising her courage and others labeling her actions as disrespectful.

The video showed Aisha Yesufu engaged in other activities while the National Anthem was being recited, seemingly unbothered by the commotion around her.

Her refusal to stand has sparked a wider conversation about the role of activism and dissent in Nigeria’s political landscape.

@debby_simeon69: It’s not by force you stand for the National anthem…. Tinubu can’t wake up and opposed law on the citizens. Aisha Yesufu did the right thing…. Tinubu didn’t seek public opinion before him and his thieves passed the law.

@isidore00001: Jehovah witnesses don’t sing or recognize any national anthem…has anyone arrested them??Is she breaking any law? No.I wonder why APC supporters are calling for her arrest.

@bhooksman: My church sings the anthem every Sunday… I wunt even stand up

@onyesome: As a fulani wife, what do you expect from her?

One thing is certain, however, Aisha Yesufu remains unapologetic and unafraid to speak her mind, even in the face of controversy.
