ASUU Opposes Student Education Loan, Describes It as “Modern Day Slavery”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Calabar Zone, has vehemently opposed the proposed Student Education Loan by the Federal Government, describing it as a ploy to enslave Nigerian students and keep them indebted to the country forever.

The union’s zonal chairperson, Dr. Happiness Uduk, stated that instead of loans, the government should use the funds for interventions in higher institutions to make them self-reliant and provide highly subsidized tertiary education.

ASUU also called for a renegotiation of the agreement reached with the government, condemned the proliferation of universities without adequate funding, and urged the government to implement the 2020 ASUU-FGN Memorandum of Action.

The union warned that failure to meet their demands would lead to industrial action, stressing that strike is the only language the government understands.
