Organised Labour has rejected the Federal Government’s proposed new minimum wage of N54,000, according to a leader of the labour movement who spoke to Vanguard on Tuesday. This comes after the government increased its initial offer of N48,000, which was previously rejected by labour leaders.
The development follows a meeting between the Federal Government and Organised Labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress. Labour leaders had earlier walked out on the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage over the government’s initial proposal.
Last week, Organised Labour dismissed the possibility of accepting N100,000 as the new minimum wage and urged the government to take negotiations seriously. Labour leaders insisted that they used the lowest minimum in arriving at N615,000 as the new minimum wage, which they are demanding.
The rejection of the N54,000 proposal indicates that the impasse between the government and labour leaders continues, with workers pushing for a higher minimum wage to address the rising cost of living and economic challenges in the country.
