Israel’s foreign minister issued a warning that Israel would retaliate directly against Iran if it launched an attack on Israel.
The statement, delivered in Hebrew and Farsi by Israel Katz, followed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s vow to punish Israel for a suspected IDF strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria.
Khamenei also criticized Western support for Israel in its conflicts with Hamas and Gaza.
While Israel has not officially admitted to the strike, tensions have heightened as it faces threats from Iran-backed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
The airstrike, which killed 12 people including Iranian and Syrian military officials, has fueled Iran’s determination to retaliate.
Khamenei emphasized that the attack on the consulate was viewed as an assault on Iranian territory.
Neither Katz nor Khamenei provided specifics on the form of retaliation.
The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, defended Israel’s actions against Iran, citing Iran’s longstanding hostility towards Israel and its support for militant proxies.
