Starvation looms in Igbomoturu in Bayelsa over military siege; residents can’t farm, fish

The coastal town of Igbomotoru in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, is facing a looming humanitarian crisis as residents are unable to farm or fish due to a military siege. The siege, laid by troops in search of a militant leader suspected of orchestrating the killings in the area, has left the community cut off from vital food sources.

Reports from the area indicate that Okuama women fled into the forests when soldiers allegedly opened fire on villagers in the town hall after the community resisted their attempt to apprehend community leaders. The town of Okuama is currently inaccessible, with only military personnel able to enter and exit the area.

Despite efforts to provide assistance, neighboring communities have been hesitant to take in fleeing residents from Okuama as refugees due to fears of persecution by soldiers conducting searches for individuals involved in the violent incident.

The situation has left the displaced individuals, particularly women and children, without access to food and basic necessities. As a result, hunger is becoming a serious concern, with residents struggling to find sustenance in the midst of the ongoing military operations.

Local authorities, including Bayelsa State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, have been unable to visit the affected areas due to the security situation. Calls have been made for the government to establish a refugee camp for those displaced by the conflict and to provide much-needed food aid to alleviate the growing humanitarian crisis.

The continued presence of soldiers in neighboring communities, such as Orere community in Ewu Kingdom, has also raised concerns about the safety and well-being of innocent civilians who may be subjected to harassment or mistreatment during the military search operations. The situation remains tense as residents wait for a resolution to the crisis that has left them vulnerable and in desperate need of assistance.
