Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAATS) have effectively shut the gates of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) campus in protest over withheld salaries and other issues.
The non-academic staff unions at UNILAG have embarked on a seven-day warning strike, causing widespread disruption to activities at the university. The protesters have blocked the main gates of the institution, preventing both students and staff from entering or exiting the campus.
The unions are demanding the immediate payment of their salaries, which they claim have been deliberately withheld by the university management. They also cite other grievances related to welfare issues, including inadequate funding, lack of promotion, and poor working conditions.
The atmosphere at UNILAG is tense, with the protesters chanting slogans and carrying placards with messages condemning the management’s actions. The unions have vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met, despite the inconvenience caused to students and staff.
Efforts to reach the UNILAG management for comments on the situation have been unsuccessful so far. As the standoff between the non-academic staff unions and the university management continues, the academic calendar and operations at UNILAG remain severely affected.
