National Union of Journalists Urges Immediate Release of Abducted Lagos-Based Journalist

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has demanded the swift and unconditional release of Segun Olatunji, a prominent journalist based in Lagos who was reportedly kidnapped by armed men from his residence in the early hours of last week Friday.

The NUJ, in a statement released on Tuesday and signed by Assistant National Secretary Akorede Opeyemi, expressed deep concern over Olatunji’s abduction and emphasized the need to protect press freedom.

According to witnesses, Olatunji was taken from his home in Iyana Odo, Abule Egba area of Lagos, by ten armed assailants, two of whom were dressed in military uniforms. The journalist’s whereabouts have remained unknown since the incident.

“The disappearance of Segun Olatunji, the editor of First News newspapers, is another tragic reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in the line of duty,” the statement read.

While it is still unclear which government agency might be responsible for Olatunji’s arrest, the NUJ highlighted the importance of valuing freedom of the press and freedom of movement for media professionals.

“We firmly believe that freedom of the press and freedom of opinion are fundamental elements of the rule of law and democracy,” the statement continued. “In light of this incident, the Nigerian government must take immediate action to safeguard the well-being and security of journalists.”

The NUJ appealed to the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into Olatunji’s abduction and take all necessary measures to secure his release without delay.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among journalists and media organizations, who see the abduction as a grave threat to press freedom in Nigeria. Calls for Olatunji’s release have resonated across the country, with various groups and individuals expressing solidarity and demanding justice.

As the investigation continues, the NUJ remains committed to protecting the rights and safety of journalists, urging the Nigerian government to address this matter urgently and ensure that acts of intimidation against the press are not tolerated.

Media professionals and human rights activists are closely monitoring the developments surrounding Segun Olatunji’s case, hoping for his safe return and a renewed commitment from authorities to protect journalists who play a vital role in upholding democracy and accountability in the nation.
