Early Monday morning, members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at the University of Abuja took to the streets carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding better working conditions and the implementation of agreements reached with the government.
The protesters blockaded the entrance to the university, preventing students, staff, and visitors from accessing the premises. Banners with messages such as “No agreement, no work” and “Fair wages for all university workers” were displayed during the demonstration.
In a statement to reporters, Mr. James Ojo, the Chairman of SSANU University of Abuja branch, highlighted the necessity of the warning strike to bring attention to the challenges faced by university workers and to urge the government to meet their demands.
“We have been left with no choice but to take this action due to the government’s failure to honor our agreements. Our members are resolute in their stance, and we will continue this strike until our demands are addressed,” Mr. Ojo emphasized.
The warning strike, set to last for 7 days, will provide the union with space to evaluate the government’s response and determine the subsequent steps to be taken.
While the blockade inconvenienced students and staff, many voiced their understanding and support for the union’s cause. A student who was affected by the demonstration expressed solidarity, stating, “I stand by their right to demand improved working conditions. Hopefully, the government will heed their grievances and work towards a resolution.”
The SSANU warning strike forms part of a broader nationwide action by university workers to advocate for enhanced working conditions and the fulfillment of agreements established with the government.
