Senator Abdul Ningi Resigns as Northern Senators Forum Chair After Suspension Over Alleged Budget Padding

In a surprising turn of events, Senator Abdul Ningi has chosen to resign from his position as the chairman of the Northern Senators Forum (NSF) following a suspension over allegations of padding the 2024 budget with illegal projects worth over N3 trillion. This decision comes shortly after Senator Ningi was suspended for three months for his alleged actions.

The suspension was initially proposed for 12 months by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who accused Ningi of criminal misinformation and breach of peace in the National Assembly and the country. However, Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Abdulfatai Buhari intervened, advocating for a reduced suspension of six and three months respectively.

Senator Akpabio presided over a voice vote, with the majority of lawmakers supporting a three-month suspension for Ningi. In response to this outcome, Senator Abdul Ningi has decided to step down from his position as the chairman of the NSF.

Ningi’s resignation comes amidst internal strife and discord within the Senate, as differing opinions and allegations have rocked the legislative body. The Northern Senators Forum will now need to elect a new chairperson to fill the void left by Ningi and continue their work on behalf of the Northern region of Nigeria.
