Three-time World Heavyweight Boxing Champion and Olympic gold medalist, Muhammad Ali will be inducted into WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2024, as reported by Variety.
Ali’s global fame stemmed from his charisma, confidence, and prowess in the ring.
Widely known as “The Greatest,” Ali’s impact extended beyond sports, encompassing activism, artistry, and a charismatic personality that earned him worldwide acclaim.
Despite his primary recognition as a boxer, Ali left a significant mark in sports entertainment. In the historic “War of the Worlds” exhibition match on June 26, 1976, against WWE Hall of Famer Antonio Inoki in Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan arena, Ali showcased his skills.
The bout, governed by specific rules, ended in a 15-round draw before 32,000 spectators and was broadcast to an additional 33,000 fans at Shea Stadium in New York.
This event garnered widespread success, attracting new fans and foreshadowing elements of modern mixed martial arts.
After retiring from boxing with a remarkable record of 56-5 and 37 knockouts, Ali made a return to the squared circle. In 1984, he served as the special guest referee for WrestleMania’s inaugural main event between Hulk Hogan & Mr. T and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper & “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff.
Ali’s pivotal moment occurred when he delivered his signature right-hand punch to Piper, restoring order to the match.
Despite his passing on June 3, 2016, at the age of 74, Muhammad Ali’s legacy endures as one of the greatest athletes. His contributions to modernizing and globalizing professional wrestling played a crucial role in seamlessly blending the realms of sports and entertainment.
