Veteran Actor, Dramatist, Folk Singer, Poet, and Playwright Jimi Solanke Passes Away at 82

 

Renowned Nigerian actor, dramatist, folk singer, poet, and playwright, Jimi Solanke, has sadly passed away at the age of 82. Solanke, known for his multifaceted talents, breathed his last on Monday morning after a brief illness while en route to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital.

According to reports, Solanke was last seen holding a meeting with some stakeholders in Remo the night before his untimely demise. It is clear that even in his final moments, his dedication to his craft and passion for the arts remained unyielding.

Born on July 4, 1942, in Ipara Remo, Jimi Solanke’s artistic journey began as a pioneering member of the Orisun Theatre Group, founded by the renowned Wole Soyinka, in 1961. From there, his contributions to the global entertainment industry spanned seven decades, leaving an indelible mark on various platforms.

Solanke’s talent and versatility shone through in epic performances such as “Death and the King’s Horseman,” “Kurunmi,” “Kongi’s Harvest,” “The Divorce,” and “Ovaramwen Nogbaisi.” His captivating stagecraft and theatrical brilliance earned him accolades and recognition, both locally and internationally.

The Oxford Times hailed Solanke as a “Skilled Nigerian Actor,” praising his remarkable performances. The New York Times also recognized him as the star of an “Excellent Troupe” during a performance of Wole Soyinka’s masterpiece, “Kongi’s Harvest.”

Throughout his career, Solanke never ceased to inspire and captivate audiences with his mesmerizing storytelling and immense talent. His impact extended beyond Nigeria, as he participated in international festivals in Senegal and Algeria during the 1970s, showcasing the richness of Nigerian culture and artistry to the world.
