The Itsekiri Interest Group is calling on the government to intervene and put an end to the rumours and disputes over the ownership of the Olu of Warri’s territory. The group has stated that there is ample evidence from the 16th and 17th centuries that authenticate the Olu’s supremacy over the entire Warri Division.
In a statement signed by the Chairman, Gbubemi Awala, and Secretary, Weyinmi Yalaju, the group refuted petitions and publications disputing Olu’s kingdom, noting that the instrument that established the Itsekiri Communal Lands Rights in 1959 applied to the entire Warri division, making Olu the ‘prescribed authority’ over the region.
The group expressed concern over the threats to their peaceful existence and accused the Urhobo and Ijaw communities of defying court judgments and seeking to embarrass the state government regarding the Olu’s position. They called on the government to help preserve their Royalty from the treacheries of those who have received the Olu’s benevolence.
The Itsekiri Interest Group also highlighted the historical significance of the Olu of Warri’s reign, stating that the word ‘Warri’ derives from ‘Iwere’ the name of their homeland, and that evidence from European sources dating back to the 16th century refers to the Olu as the ruler of ‘Warri’.
The group’s statement urged Governor Oborevwori to help preserve the Olu’s authority and clarify the ownership of the territory to put an end to the ongoing disputes and rumours. They hope that the government intervention will bring about a peaceful resolution to the situation.
