President Tinubu To Drop Five Ministers In Cabinet Reshuffle

Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu is being rumoured to tinker with the idea of a cabinet reshuffle.

Tinubu had in August 2023 inaugurated his ministers after clearance from the Nigerian Senate but according to news medium, THEWILL, he’s expected to implement a cabinet reshuffle any moment from now, dropping 5 ministers in the process.

The news medium quoted two independent sources as saying that the President intends to rejig his cabinet because some of the appointees are “struggling in their portfolios and unprepared for the job”.

The Nigerian leader had in November during a Cabinet Retreat at the Conference Centre of the Presidential Villa, in Abuja. warned ministers and other top appointees against under-performance.

“You will sign a bond with me, If you are performing, nothing to fear, if you miss the objective, if you don’t perform, you leave us,” Tinubu had said at the 3-day retreat.

President Tinubu also charged his Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, to reactivate the “Presidential Delivery Tracker”, to help track and report the performances of his cabinet members.

It is expected that the current corruption scandal linked to the minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, will serve as the launchpad o implement the changes.

Tinubu had on Monday, suspended Betta Edu from office for transferring funds into a private account, even as he called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate her.

Interior Minister, Tunji-Ojo was also summoned by the President after he was linked to a firm, New Planet Projects Ltd, which received N438 million as “consultancy fees” related to the National Social Register contract, part of the controversial N3 billion contracts awarded by Edu.

One of the sources told THEWILL that “as many as five could be dropped.”

There is also a vacancy in the Ministry of Labour and Employment following the resignation of Simon Bako Lalong, a former Plateau State Governor, who resigned from the job to become the Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
