A recent investigative report by the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) Africa Eye on the late founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Pastor Temitope Balogun Joshua, commonly known as TB Joshua, has sparked mixed reactions from the public.
The comprehensive report, which took over two years to compile, uncovered disturbing allegations of rape, torture, and confinement of church members in a secretive compound in Lagos. According to the victims’ accounts, they were subjected to sexual abuse and forced abortions for nearly two decades.
One victim, identified as Rae, described her experience after joining the church at the age of 21, stating that she spent the next 12 years as one of Joshua’s disciples within the compound. The report also interviewed former disciples and church workers, shedding light on their harrowing experiences.
The investigation did not stop there, as it also delved into the tragic collapse of a guesthouse for church pilgrims in 2014, which claimed the lives of 116 people. Additionally, Joshua was accused of fabricating “miracle healings” that were broadcast to millions of people worldwide.
The report, which was published in three parts on YouTube under the title “Disciples: The Cult of TB Joshua,” has ignited a firestorm on social media. Users expressed their diverse opinions on the revelations brought to light by the investigation.
One user, @ur_bwoi_towa, drew parallels between Joshua’s church and certain campus ministries or cults. Another user, @snort_randy, shared their disbelief at how adults fell for Joshua’s theatrics, recalling their personal experience of watching his televised sermons for comedic relief.
However, not everyone was quick to dismiss Joshua’s work. @WondaDell argued that a single documentary lacking concrete evidence could not erase the impact Joshua had on the world, emphasizing the need for more objective evaluation.
As the news spread, more individuals shared their astonishment and shock. A YouTube user, @DebelAjiboye, expressed their disbelief at the revelations, pausing the video multiple times to process each new revelation.
The BBC’s revelations have undoubtedly stirred mixed reactions among viewers. The report has raised important questions about the conduct and practices of religious figures and institutions. Further investigation and public discourse are necessary to shed light on the allegations and ensure justice for the victims.
