Butchers in Abia Protest Alleged Eviction Threat; Seek Governor’s Interventions

In a display of unity and defiance, butchers in Abia State took to the streets of Umuahia on Thursday to protest against an alleged eviction threat hanging over their heads. The butchers claimed that certain individuals, including a high-ranking government official, were orchestrating the plot to force them out of the land they were allocated by the government in 1994.

Chanting slogans and brandishing placards with messages like “Protect Our Livelihoods” and “We Stand for Justice”, the butchers expressed their concern for the potential displacement of their businesses and livelihoods. They demanded the immediate intervention of Governor Alex Otti to resolve the matter and protect their interests from powerful figures they accused of spearheading the eviction plot.

Leaders of the protesting butchers highlighted the importance of their trade and its contribution to the economy of Abia State. They emphasized that the alleged eviction threat could result in severe implications not only for them but also for the entire livestock and meat processing industry in the state.

Addressing the crowd, one of the protesting butchers, Mr. Chukwudi Johnson, exclaimed, “We have been law-abiding and productive members of this community for decades. It is deeply distressing to face the possibility of eviction from the land we were given by the government itself. We implore Governor Otti to hear our plea and protect our rights and businesses.”

The butchers’ community alleged that some powerful individuals, including a top government official, were using their influence to unjustly claim the land allocated to them years ago. They maintained that the threat of eviction without any alternative arrangements would not only be detrimental to their livelihoods but also disrupt the meat supply chain in the state, leading to potential shortages and increased prices.

With the peaceful protest gaining significant attention, the butchers expressed hope for a swift resolution to their grievances. They urged the government to investigate the validity of the eviction threat and take immediate action against those found guilty of attempting to uproot their established businesses.

Efforts to reach the accused government official for comments on the allegations against him were unsuccessful at the time of this report. However, Governor Alex Otti’s office has assured the butchers and the public that the matter will be thoroughly looked into, and appropriate action will be taken to ensure justice prevails.

As tensions escalate, the fate of Abia State’s butchers hangs in the balance. All eyes now turn to Governor Otti to see how he will address the pressing concerns of these hardworking individuals who have dedicated their lives to the meat industry in the state.
