The Conference of Nigerian Intellectuals in the United States has raised concerns about the alleged human rights violations occurring under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, specifically regarding the continued detention of former Central Bank Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele. Despite multiple court orders demanding his release, Emefiele remains in custody.
In a statement released by the President of the group, Dr. Philips Idris, the organization expressed their disapproval of the way the Economics and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handled the Emefiele case. They described his ongoing detention as both illegal and malicious.
Dr. Idris expressed his frustration at the apparent disregard for the rule of law and the freedom and rights of innocent Nigerians under the current administration. He cited Emefiele’s case as an example, stating that it represented a pattern of abuse.
Quoting Article 9 of the United Nations Human Rights, Dr. Idris emphasized that no individual should be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention, or exile. He highlighted the obligations of governments under international law to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The group expressed their concerns for Emefiele’s well-being, claiming that he is being treated like a common criminal in Nigeria. Despite multiple court orders for his release, the EFCC and Department of State Services (DSS) have continually ignored them. Dr. Idris suggested that there may be individuals who desire Emefiele’s demise.
The Conference of Nigerian Intellectuals in the United States condemned the blatant disregard for the law and the dehumanizing treatment of Emefiele. They believe that his persecution stems from carrying out his duties as Governor of the Central Bank.
