In an exclusive interview on Friday, renowned legal luminary and former Attorney-General of Abia State, Professor Awa Kalu, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), addressed the unnecessary controversy surrounding the recent Court of Appeal judgment that led to the removal of Governor Abba Yusuf from office in Kano State.
Prof. Kalu, a respected member of the inner bar, shared his perspective on the matter, asserting that the controversial ruling had raised questions about the fairness and impartiality of the judiciary. He voiced concern about the potential impact of such controversies on the nation’s fledgling democracy.
The Court of Appeal, on Thursday, nullified Governor Yusuf’s election victory, citing substantial irregularities during the election process. The ruling was met with mixed reactions from various political factions, with both supporters and detractors expressing their opinions.
Prof. Kalu acknowledged that the political atmosphere was charged, particularly in light of the nation’s upcoming general elections. Still, he stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the judiciary maintains its credibility.
He emphasized that the judiciary must remain independent and act in the best interest of justice and fairness. Prof. Kalu urged all parties involved to adhere to legal processes and exhaust all available options within the confines of the law to address their concerns.
The former Attorney-General further urged the government and electoral bodies to strengthen institutions responsible for conducting free, fair, and transparent elections. He emphasized the need to address issues such as voter apathy and ensure that the electoral process is carried out without interference or manipulation.
