In a landmark ruling, the Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has affirmed Dapo Abiodun as the duly elected governor of Ogun State. The ruling comes after a 2 to 1 judgment on Friday, in which the State and National Assembly Appeal Court dismissed the appeal by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ladi Adebutu, in the state governorship poll.
Delivering the majority judgment, Justice Joseph Ikyegh stated that the appeal lacked merit and upheld the victory of Abiodun. The judgment reinforces the legitimacy and mandate of the governor, affirming the outcome of the March 18 poll.
However, the minority judgment, delivered by Justice Jane Inyang, took a different stance. Justice Inyang upheld the appeal and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a fresh election in Ogun State within 90 days. This contrasting opinion adds an unexpected twist to the ruling.
Dapo Abiodun’s supporters have welcomed the ruling, viewing it as a validation of the electoral process and an affirmation of the people’s choice. They believe that with the legal challenges now settled, Abiodun can focus on implementing his development agenda for Ogun State.
On the other hand, Ladi Adebutu and his supporters are disappointed by the verdict. They view the decision as a setback for the PDP and a missed opportunity for the development of the state. Adebutu’s camp has expressed their intention to explore possible legal avenues to challenge the ruling.
