Yiaga Africa and Former INEC Chairman Call for Reliable Voter Register Ahead of 2027 General Elections

In preparation for the upcoming 2027 general elections, Yiaga Africa, in collaboration with former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, has emphasized the need for a reliable voter register to initiate the electoral process. This call was made during a Policy Roundtable event organized by Yiaga Africa, with the theme ‘Improving the Integrity of Nigeria’s Voter Register’.

As stipulated in the 1999 Constitution, INEC has been entrusted with the core responsibility of conducting elections and referendums, managing political parties, constituency delimitation, and voter and civic education. It is evident that the significance of a dependable voter register cannot be overlooked in ensuring transparent elections and upholding democracy.

During the Policy Roundtable, both Yiaga Africa and Prof Attahiru Jega highlighted the paramount importance of a reliable voter register in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. They emphasized that a comprehensive and accurate register of voters is crucial to guarantee the credibility of election outcomes and enhance public trust in the electoral system.

Prof Attahiru Jega, drawing from his experience as the former INEC Chairman, stressed that the effectiveness of the electoral system is dependent on a reliable voter register, as it serves as the foundation for conducting credible elections. He further advocated for the adoption of modern technologies and robust data management systems to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the voter register.

Yiaga Africa, a leading civil society organization focused on electoral and democratic governance, reiterated the need for INEC to prioritize the compilation and regular updating of the voter register as part of their mandate. They emphasized that a transparent and inclusive process should be followed to maintain public confidence in the electoral system.

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, the call made by Yiaga Africa and Prof Attahiru Jega to establish a reliable voter register serves as a timely reminder of the importance of integrity and transparency in the electoral process. It is hoped that INEC, in collaboration with various stakeholders, will take necessary measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the voter register, thus paving the way for free and fair elections in the future.
