In a recent statement, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) vociferously dismissed claims made by the police that members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) had been making coercive phone calls to force people into supporting their cause. IPOB vehemently denounced the allegations as fallacious and ridiculous, thereby refuting any involvement in such activities.
The Eastern Security Network, a regional security outfit established by IPOB, has pledged to protect and ensure the safety of the people residing in the Southeast region of Nigeria. However, IPOB maintains that their efforts have always been directed towards safeguarding the interests of the indigenous people and promoting the well-being of their communities.
The Police had recently alleged that ESN forces were involved in making intimidating phone calls, pressuring individuals into offering financial support or endorsing the struggles pursued by IPOB. The police claimed that this coercion was evident in the intimidation tactics employed by ESN members during these calls.
In response, IPOB spokesperson, Chika Edoziem, dismissed the allegations as baseless fabrications aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the organization. Edoziem emphatically stated that IPOB was not involved in making any form of threatening phone calls or using coercion to gather support for their cause. He condemned the police for attempting to link IPOB with any illegal activities or misconduct.
Edoziem further noted that IPOB’s methods of garnering support have always been through peaceful means, such as awareness campaigns, rallies, and engaging with relevant stakeholders to address the concerns of the indigenous people of Biafra. He urged the public to disregard the police allegations and reminded them of IPOB’s commitment to promoting the rights and aspirations of the Biafran people.
While tensions have periodically risen in the region due to the recurring agitation for Biafra’s independence, IPOB maintains that its objective lies in the pursuit of self-determination and the protection of the rights of the indigenous peoples. The organization asserts that ESN is focused on combating criminal elements, including herdsmen attacks and other security challenges that threaten the lives and livelihoods of people in the Southeast.
As IPOB refutes the police claims as baseless and unfounded, the public awaits further developments regarding the ongoing tussle between the organization and the Nigerian authorities. The burgeoning tension surrounding these issues underscores the critical need for open dialogue and peaceful resolution, ensuring the collective interests and aspirations of all parties involved.
