The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) shed light on the recent clash between its security operatives and Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel at the EFCC’s Kaduna State Zonal Command. The incident took place on Friday, and the EFCC aims to clarify the events leading up to the altercation.
According to reports, the confrontation occurred when a team of EFCC operatives, armed with a valid search warrant, arrived at the premises of the Kaduna State Zonal Command. Their objective was to conduct a routine investigation on some of the premises belonging to NAF officers allegedly involved in financial malfeasance.
However, the situation spiraled out of control when a clash erupted between EFCC operatives and NAF personnel present at the scene. Firearms were discharged, leading to injuries on both sides. Additionally, some vehicles were damaged during the ensuing chaos.
DFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the incident and stressed that the EFCC acted within its legal mandate, citing the organization’s responsibility to fight economic and financial crimes without prejudice. He emphasized that the EFCC carried out the operation with proper authorization and adhered to standard operating procedures.
Uwujaren expressed sadness over the incident, stating, “We regret the unfortunate incident at our Kaduna State Zonal Command.” He assured the public and stakeholders that the EFCC would cooperate with relevant authorities in conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
In response to the incident, the Nigerian Air Force issued a press release describing the altercation as an “unfortunate misunderstanding.” They acknowledged that a high-level meeting involving representatives from the NAF and EFCC had already taken place to address the situation and prevent future occurrences.
The NAF also emphasized its commitment to maintaining cordial relations with sister agencies while vowing to take appropriate disciplinary measures against any personnel found guilty of unprofessional conduct.
The clash between the EFCC and NAF personnel has sparked concerns among Nigerians, questioning the level of collaboration and cooperation between security agencies operating within the country. It has further intensified the call for improved inter-agency coordination, especially considering the substantial overlap in their roles concerning national security and combating corruption.
As investigations continue, it is believed that the findings will shed more light on the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident. Efforts will also be made to strengthen relations between the EFCC and the Nigerian Air Force to prevent similar clashes in the future.
