In a shocking revelation, the Lagos State Government has announced that at least 340 husbands have been subjected to physical violence by their wives over the course of the last year. The Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) disclosed this alarming data in their quarterly report.
According to Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the Executive Secretary of DSVA, the frequency of male victims reporting domestic violence incidents has also risen significantly over the past year. Between September 2022 and July 2023, a total of 340 cases were reported by men, exposing the disturbing reality of spousal abuse.
It is worth noting that this surge in reported incidents comes after the Lagos State Government ratified the Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy in December 2016. This policy was implemented to ensure the safety and protection of children in various institutions, compelling these institutions to adopt proactive measures in handling reports and disclosures of abuse.
The Executive Order (NO.E0/AA08 of 2016) puts a strong emphasis on safeguarding the rights of children, making it mandatory for child-centred institutions to adhere to strict protocols and guidelines. The aim is to create a safe environment for children under their care and prevent any form of abuse.
The recent revelation regarding the rising number of husbands being beaten by their wives is an alarming wake-up call for society. Domestic violence has long been associated with women as victims, but this data highlights the need to acknowledge that men can also be victims of such abuse.
