A shocking incident took place in Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, as a 20-year-old wife identified as Amina Hassan allegedly set her husband’s house on fire for his refusal to divorce her. The incident occurred just five weeks after their marriage.
According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, Amina had informed the police that there was a pre-wedding arrangement with her husband, Muhammed Auwal, that he would divorce her shortly after their marriage ceremony. It is believed that this agreement was made known to both families involved.
However, Amina claimed that Muhammed refused to honor the agreement and resorted to physically assaulting her when she asked for a divorce. Frustrated by his resistance, Amina reached her breaking point and decided to take drastic measures by setting their house on fire.
During questioning by police operatives, Amina reiterated her pleas for a divorce and highlighted her husband’s violence towards her. The police are currently investigating the matter.
It was reported that Amina had expressed her disinterest in the marriage to her parents a few days before the wedding. Despite her reservations, her parents insisted on continuing with the wedding as they had already sent out invitation cards.
Sources close to the situation claimed that after all her attempts failed, Amina sought the help of a native doctor in an effort to change her husband’s heart towards her. However, instead of deterring his interest, her actions seemed to have the opposite effect, causing her frustration and anger to escalate.
The native doctor allegedly fled Mubi and became uncontactable as Amina’s anger grew. It is unclear if the native doctor had any involvement in the fire incident.
This incident has shocked the community, and many are expressing concern over the lengths Amina went to in order to obtain a divorce. Questions have been raised about the underlying issues in their relationship and the expectations placed on Amina to seek a divorce so soon after getting married.
The police are expected to conclude their investigation soon and determine the appropriate legal actions to take against Amina Hassan for her alleged arson.
