NYSC Receives 350,000 Corps Members Every Year — DG

It was gathered by Hobnob News Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig-Gen. Dogara Ahmed disclosed that NYSC, as a scheme, receives an average of 350,000 corps members into its scheme yearly to promote national unity.

According to Hobnob News reports, he disclosed this while delivering the 5th Convocation Lecture of the Edo State University, Uzairue, titled “Harnessing the Potentials of the Nigerian Youths for National Unity and Development”.

Represented by Ladan Baba, NYSC Director in Charge of the South-South Zone, Ahmed claimed that the scheme is the largest youth organisation in Africa and has continued to aid participants’ understanding of Nigeria’s diversity.

“The NYSC was therefore established as a deliberate Public Policy to ensure the realisation of the government’s post-war strategy of Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation (RRR)

“NYSC is a significant step towards youth engagement and mandates qualified graduates of tertiary institutions to participate in a one-year service programme to foster national unity and community development”, he said.

Apparently, he said that NYSC will continue to maintain an equitable distribution of service corps in order to achieve its objectives, adding that corps members are assigned to work together in states other than their states of origin.

ALso, the DG maintained  that the scheme has contributed to the development of education through the posting of corp members to schools across the country as teachers.

The NYSC boss, however, called on the state government to live up to their statutory responsibilities to the scheme in the provision, maintenance, and upgrading of camp facilities.

Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, Vice Chancellor of the University, in his welcome address, commended the Pro-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Emeritus Thomas Audu, for his contributions to the development of the school.

He said , “harnessing the potential of youth for national unity and development”, is a clarion call, an earnest plea to acknowledge the immense capabilities residing within the youth and the role they play in shaping the future of Nigeria.

He congratulated the graduates and advised them to be confident in themselves, noting that it is their knowledge and belief that would propel them to heights.

On his part, the University Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Audu, thanked the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for his support of the institution.
